The system of the Tonalpohualli can be best understood by imagining two wheels that are connected to each other. One wheel has the number "one" to "thirteen" written on it. The second wheel has twenty symbols on it. In the initial situation, number "one" combines with the first symbol. This is the first day of the Tonalpohualli. Now the wheels start moving and number "two" combines with the second glyph. This is the second day. After fourteen days, an Aztec Week (trecenas en español) of thirteen days has passed. The wheel with the numbers shows "one" again. The other wheels now shows the fourteenth symbol. After 260 days, the two wheels have returned to their initial position. The Tonalpohualli starts all over again.

Dividing time among Gods.

A day (tonalli) in the Tenalpohualli consist of a number and a symbol or day sign, each daysign is dedicated to a God. The twenty days and their Gods are successively.

Each Day is ruled by a God.

The nature of a Day is also influenced by its number.

More important, each trecenas has a God that rules over that very thirteen day period.

The twenty trecenas and associated Gods or elemental forces are successively empowered.

El sistema del Tonalpohualli se puede entender mejor imaginando dos ruedas conectadas una a la otra. Una rueda tiene los números del "uno" al "trece" en ella. La segunda contiene veinte símbolos. En la situación inicial, el "uno" se combina con el primer simbolo. Ese es el primer día del Tonalpohualli. Ahora las ruedas empiezan a moverse y el número "dos" se combina con el segundo símbolo. Este es el segundo día. Después de catorce días, una semana Azteca de trece días ha pasado (en español trecena). La rueda con los números muestra el "uno" otra vez. La otra rueda muestra ahora el número decimocuarto. Después de 260 días, las dos ruedas han regresado a sus posiciones originales. El Tonalpohualli empieza otra vez.

Dividiendo el tiempo entre los dioses.

Un día (tonalli) en el Tenalpohualli consiste en un número y un símbolo o signo del día, cada signo del dia esta dedicado a un Dios. Los veinte días y sus Dioses son habilitados sucesivamente.
